Baixa, or lisbon downtown, is the heart of the city (see the lisbon downtown map). It is the main commercial and banking district that extends from the riverbank to the main avenue, with streets named according to traders and tradesmen in the area. It was completely rebuilt after the great earthquake of 1755 in lisbon, with streets flanked by uniform and neoclassical buildings. Baixa is a great place to stay, because it is within walking distance of major attractions, with excellent transport connections and close to shops, restaurants, and cafés. Many of its buildings have been renovated and are now tourist apartments.

The lisbon Baixa district is considered to be Lisbon downtown. It stretches from the banks of the Tagus estuary (in the south) to the Praça Marquês de Pombal (in the north) and is located between the hills of the Alfama and Chiado districts as its mentioned in lisbon downtown map. There are 5 main squares: the Praça do Comércio, the Praça dom Pedro IV (Rossio Square), the Praça dos Restauradores, the Praça Figueira and the Praça do Martim Moniz.

Lisbon baixa remains an imposing district in lisbon downtown map, with elegant squares, pedestrianized streets, cafes, and shops. Old trams, street performers, tiled Art Deco shopfronts, and elaborately-decorated pastry shops all lend a special charm to the downtown area of lisbon. Watch it all from a table outside Nicola Café in Rossio Square, facing the monumental National Theater and Saint Georges Castle, and as you stroll down the pedestrian Rua Augusta, past the triumphal arch, into the majestic Comercio Square.
